{"id":2452,"date":"2022-05-28T11:16:07","date_gmt":"2022-05-28T11:16:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/psychedelicanxiety.com\/?p=2452"},"modified":"2022-05-28T11:16:10","modified_gmt":"2022-05-28T11:16:10","slug":"im-worried-about-my-mates-drug-use","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/psychedelicanxiety.com\/de\/im-worried-about-my-mates-drug-use\/","title":{"rendered":"I\u2019m worried about my mate\u2019s drug use"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>How do you know if your mate needs support for alcohol or other drug use?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most people who use alcohol or other drugs won\u2019t experience any serious issues \u2013 and for those who do \u2013 the signs aren\u2019t always obvious.<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, sometimes there\u2019s a few hints that your mate\u2019s drug use is having an effect on their everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Know the signs so you can support them if they need help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are some potential signs?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Are they:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>late to work or missing work?<\/li><li>not turning up when you go out?<\/li><li>missing training?<\/li><li>not responding to messages?<\/li><li>always asking to lend money?<\/li><li>having relationship or family issues?<sup>2<\/sup><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe they\u2019ve already spoken to you more directly about it, and said things like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>they\u2019ve been drinking or using drugs more<\/li><li>they need more and more of a drug to get the same effect<\/li><li>they\u2019ve been using drugs or alcohol to avoid withdrawal symptoms.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>They might also have family members or other friends who are concerned about them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, often it\u2019s family and friends who first recognise that a person they care about has an alcohol or other drug issue.<sup>3<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do I talk to a mate who\u2019s struggling with alcohol or drugs?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of the issues listed above can happen for reasons other than drug use, so don\u2019t jump to conclusions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, if you do want to have a chat with your mate, these tips can help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Plan a good time to chat when you won\u2019t be interrupted.<\/li><li>Focus on their wellbeing and what you\u2019ve noticed, rather than their use of alcohol or other drugs.<\/li><li>Be ready for a negative reaction. Your mate might not see their alcohol or drug use as something to be concerned about.<\/li><li>Avoid appearing judgemental or lecturing \u2013 we\u2019re all less likely to respond positively to this approach.<\/li><li>Offer options for support \u2013 we\u2019ve provided some good ones below.<\/li><li>If they\u2019re not interested, let them know you\u2019re there if they change their mind or ever want to talk.<sup>3, 4<\/sup><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Becoming dependent on alcohol or other drugs can happen to anyone.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can be very difficult to stop once your body and mind start relying on the substance to function properly.<sup>3<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A great first step for someone concerned about their substance use is to talk to someone they trust, or reach out to a support service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if your mate does get in touch with treatment or support, your role as a support person doesn\u2019t have to end.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a number of ways you can continue to stick by them while they attempt to make a change.
