But, drinking alcohol can interfere with this as alcohol is also processed by the liver.<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mixing alcohol and medications can also increase side effects, make some medications less effective, and can even have a toxic effect.<sup>1, 2<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In some cases it can cause serious illness or death.<sup>1, 2<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, it\u2019s important to understand how your medication interacts with alcohol to reduce the risks.<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The information below is provided as a general guide only &#8211; It\u2019s always best to discuss the side effects of any new medications with your GP or pharmacist.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Benzodiazepines and alcohol<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/adf.org.au\/drug-facts\/benzodiazepines\/\">Benzodiazepines<\/a>&nbsp;or \u2018benzos\u2019 are used to treat conditions like anxiety, seizures and insomnia.<sup>3<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drugs include Temazepam, Diazepam and Lorazepam (brand names \u2018Valium\u2019, \u2018Temaze\u2019 and \u2018Xanax\u2019).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the risks of combining benzos with alcohol are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>dizziness and loss of coordination<\/li><li>drowsiness<\/li><li>increased risk of overdose.<sup>2, 3<\/sup><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Combining benzodiazepines and alcohol can be fatal. It\u2019s safest to avoid drinking while taking benzodiazepines.2, 3<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Opioids and alcohol<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/adf.org.au\/drug-facts\/opioids\/\">Opioids<\/a>&nbsp;include opioid pain medications and illegal drugs like heroin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prescription opioids include codeine, morphine and oxycodone.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking opioids with alcohol can cause:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>slowed breathing&nbsp;<\/li><li>reduced brain activity<\/li><li>drowsiness<\/li><li>fainting<\/li><li>coma<\/li><li>increased risk of overdose.<sup>2, 4<\/sup><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Combining opioids and alcohol can be fatal. For more information, talk to your prescribing doctor or pharmacist about alcohol and your medication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should also be wary of drinking alcohol if you\u2019re experiencing a mental health condition, as alcohol is a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/adf.org.au\/drug-facts\/depressants\/\">depressant<\/a>&nbsp;and may make your symptoms worse.5<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Antipsychotics and alcohol<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthdirect.gov.au\/antipsychotic-medications\">Antipsychotics<\/a>&nbsp;are a group of medications used to treat symptoms of psychosis-like paranoia, hallucinations and confused thoughts. They\u2019re also used for other mental health conditions such as severe depression.<sup>7<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drinking alcohol with antipsychotic medication can cause increased side effects.<sup>7<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Combining alcohol with antipsychotics can cause:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>dizziness<\/li><li>drowsiness<\/li><li>difficulty concentrating<\/li><li>impaired thinking or judgment.<sup>7<\/sup><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Certain antipsychotics can have more serious interactions with alcohol that can cause:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>difficulty breathing<\/li><li>low blood pressure<\/li><li>fainting<\/li><li>coma<\/li><li>seizures<\/li><li>change in body temperature or heart rate<\/li><li>increased risk of suicide.<sup>7<\/sup><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s safest to avoid drinking while taking antipsychotics.<sup>7<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can I drink alcohol on antibiotics?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a good idea to avoid drinking alcohol if you\u2019re feeling unwell.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some antibiotics, including Metronidazole (Metrogyl, Metronide, Flagyl) and Tinidazole (Fasigyn, Simplotan), shouldn\u2019t be taken with alcohol as it may lead to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>dizziness<\/li><li>drowsiness<\/li><li>stomach pain<\/li><li>nausea&nbsp;<\/li><li>headaches<\/li><li>a fast or irregular heartbeat<\/li><li>hot flushes.<sup>8<\/sup><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Alcohol should be avoided for another 48 hours after you stop taking Metronidazole, and 72 hours after Tinidazole.<sup>8<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It may also be best to avoid alcohol if you\u2019re taking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>linezolid (Xyvox)<\/li><li>doxycycline (Doxsig, Doxylin)<\/li><li>erythromycin (Eryc)<\/li><li>isoniazid.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These drugs can be affected by alcohol, and doxycycline might also be less effective for people who have a history of drinking heavily.8<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Always discuss possible side effects with your GP when starting a new course of antibiotics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other drugs and medications<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many other prescription and illicit drugs that may have increased risk of side effects when mixed with alcohol.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure you talk to your doctor about any medications you\u2019re taking, and always do your research before taking any illicit drugs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/knowyourstuff.nz\/2018\/02\/16\/more-drugs-do-not-mean-more-fun\/\">chart<\/a>&nbsp;contains useful information about mixing drugs and alcohol, but it should only be used as a guide.
