If you\u2019re somebody who chooses to drink alcohol, this can make it tricky to keep track of how much you\u2019re actually drinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, one serving is usually more than one &#8216;standard drink&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, a 375ml stubby of full-strength beer is usually around 1.4 standard drinks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An Australian standard drink contains 10g of alcohol (12.5ml of pure alcohol).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s handy info to know, because Aussie health experts recommend no more than 4 standard drinks a day and no more than 10 standard drinks in any given week.<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why? Because each extra drink can increase the risk of injury and accidents and impact on long-term health. This is not to say drinking alcohol will inevitably cause these kind of issues for every person \u2013 but it does increase the risk.<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, if you\u2019re somebody who drinks and would like to keep an eye on your drinking, keeping track of the number of standard drinks in your beverage is one way to do this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our handy standard drinks guide can help:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Spirits 40% alcohol, 30ml nip<\/li><li>Wine 13% alcohol, 100ml average serving<\/li><li>Sparkling wine 13% alcohol, 100ml<\/li><li>Full Strength Beer 4.9% alcohol, 285ml glass<\/li><li>Light Beer 2.7% alcohol, 425ml glass<\/li><li>Cider 4.9% alcohol, 285ml glass<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn.adf.org.au\/media\/images\/KnowYourStandardDrinks_web.new.width-1524.png\" alt=\"Know your standard drinks\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.adf.org.au\/media\/images\/KnowYourStandardDrinks_web.new.width-1524.png\" alt=\"Know your standard drinks\"\/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Keeping track of your drinks<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Other factors that make it difficult to track how much you\u2019re drinking include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>varying glass sizes at different venues<\/li><li>drinks mixed with unknown quantities of alcohol, e.g. in cocktails and alcoholic punches<\/li><li>shared jugs and casks<\/li><li>\u2018topping up\u2019 glasses before they\u2019re empty.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also keep track of how many standard drinks you\u2019re having by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>reading<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>the<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>label<\/strong>\u202f\u2014 all alcohol containers in Australia must show the number of standard drinks they contain<\/li><li><strong>using<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>an online calculator<\/strong>\u202f\u2014 check out the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.drinkthing.tas.gov.au\/calculator\">Drinks Calculator<\/a>&nbsp;or the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/yourroom.health.nsw.gov.au\/games-and-tools\/pages\/standard-drink-calculator.aspx\">Standard Drink\u202fCalculator<\/a><\/li><li><strong>asking<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>the bar or restaurant staff<\/strong>\u202f\u2014 if you\u2019re drinking a cocktail or other type of mixed drink, the bar staff should be able to tell you how many standards are in it.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why count standard drinks?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For some people, counting standard drinks can be used as a way to help reduce their drinking and stick to the healthier Australian drinking guidelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By following the Australian drinking guidelines and having no more than 10 standard drinks a week and no more than 4 in one day, you can reduce your immediate risk of injury and accidents and your risk of developing cancers, including breast, stomach and bowl.<sup>1<\/sup>&nbsp;Read the guidelines&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhmrc.gov.au\/health-advice\/alcohol\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Counting your drinks can also help track your blood alcohol concentration (BAC) levels and help determine whether you\u2019re OK to drive.
