And, different drugs carry different risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These risks increase significantly when you mix drugs, or mix drugs and alcohol together.<sup>1, 2<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, if you or your friends are going to use drugs or alcohol, know what to look out for in case things go wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recognising the signs of a drug reaction or overdose, and knowing how to respond, could save a life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is an overdose?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A drug overdose simply means taking too much (or a toxic amount) of a drug.<sup>3<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on the drug\/s involved, an overdose can range from unpleasant to life-threatening.<sup>4<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The drug types more likely to lead to a medical emergency if too much is taken include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/adf.org.au\/drug-facts\/depressants\/\">depressants<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/adf.org.au\/drug-facts\/alcohol\/\">alcohol<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/adf.org.au\/drug-facts\/benzodiazepines\/\">benzodiazepines<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/adf.org.au\/drug-facts\/ghb\/\">GHB<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/adf.org.au\/drug-facts\/opioids\/\">opiates<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/adf.org.au\/drug-facts\/heroin\/\">heroin<\/a>&nbsp;and prescription opioids (oxycodone, codeine, morphine, fentanyl, tramadol)<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/adf.org.au\/drug-facts\/stimulants\/\">stimulants<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/adf.org.au\/drug-facts\/cocaine\/\">cocaine<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/adf.org.au\/drug-facts\/ice\/\">ice<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/adf.org.au\/drug-facts\/amphetamines\/\">speed<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/adf.org.au\/drug-facts\/mdma\/\">MDMA<\/a>&nbsp;(ecstasy).<sup>4-6<\/sup><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If you or someone you\u2019re with experiences any of the symptoms below, call triple zero (000) immediately.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Signs of an overdose<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If someone is having an overdose, they might show some or many of these signs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>very slow or difficult breathing<\/li><li>blue lips or nails<\/li><li>seizures<\/li><li>loss of consciousness<\/li><li>confusion<\/li><li>choking or gurgling sounds<\/li><li>cool or clammy skin<\/li><li>pupils look like pin-points.<sup>4, 6<\/sup><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to respond in an overdose<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are a few steps you need to take straight away:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>call triple zero 000<\/li><li>if they\u2019re unconscious, lay them on their side in the recovery position<\/li><li>don\u2019t leave them alone<\/li><li>if they\u2019ve taken opioids, and you have access to Naloxone, use it<\/li><li>tell the paramedics what drug\/s they\u2019ve had.&nbsp;<strong>Paramedics are there to help and will not involve the police<\/strong>.<sup>4, 6<\/sup><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other signs and responses&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a person gets&nbsp;<strong><em>really drowsy<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;(one of the risks with alcohol, heroin or tranquilisers):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>call triple zero 000<\/li><li>try to keep them awake<\/li><li>lay them on their side (recovery position) and talk to them<\/li><li>don\u2019t try to \u2018wake them up\u2019 with coffee, shaking or shouting.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a person gets&nbsp;<strong><em>tense, anxious or panicky<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;(one of the risks with speed, ecstasy, LSD and magic mushrooms):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>talk to them calmly<\/li><li>reassure them and explain the feelings will pass<\/li><li>take them to a quieter place away from bright lights, loud music and crowds<\/li><li>encourage them to take long, slow, deep breaths.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If someone is&nbsp;<strong><em>dehydrated<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;(symptoms include cramps, sudden tiredness, headache or fainting \u2013 one of the risks with speed and ecstasy):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>take them outside or to a cooler place<\/li><li>encourage them to sip water or non-alcoholic drinks (no more than 250ml per hour)<\/li><li>remove any excess clothing to cool them down<\/li><li>if they feel faint, lie them on their side (recovery position)<\/li><li>if symptoms continue call triple zero 000.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some people can become impulsive and irritable when they use drugs and alcohol.
